IMPD Officer Leads Effort to Send Supplies to Victims of Hurricane Laura in Louisiana

In the early morning of August 27, 2020, category 4 Hurricane Laura hit the south west Louisiana and parts of eastern Texas. Almost 17 feet of water and 115 mph winds tore down thousands of homes and businesses. I have a personal connection to Lake Charles, Louisiana – a city that was heavily affected. The home of my childhood friend, her husband and four small children has been condemned and they have been in a hotel for over a month due to the damaged inflicted by the hurricane. It saddens me that there has been very little media coverage of the aftermath of Laura.

It is predicted that there will not be water or electricity in Lake Charles and the surrounding cities until Thanksgiving. I am hoping that with IMPD’s platform, our community can come together to bring some relief to the areas affected.

I have been in contact with SWLA Center for Health Services in Louisiana, a non-profit Community Health Center that aspires to eliminate all disparities in access to healthcare by providing quality, cost-effective and comprehensive primary healthcare. Before landfall of the hurricane, SWLA began collecting supplies and providing transportation for those who chose to evacuate. When the hurricane cleared, SWLA provided a “Water Fleet” trailer that allowed members of the community water for restrooms, hygiene and showers.

I have teamed up with Indy Public Safety Foundation to collect hygiene and sanitary products to send to Louisiana. There is no limit or boundaries set on lending help to those in need. IMPD Officers and civilians will collect needed items at the dates and times listed below at the JTV Hill Center, located at 1806 Colombia Avenue.
